Video Surveillance- It's Not Just for Gas Stations

How many times have you turned on the evening news and heard (and seen the video surveillance) about another gas station or convenience store being robbed? Everyone knows that most gas stations and convenience stores have video surveillance. You might have thought, When will these crooks ever learn? Unfortunately, it seems that they are. More and more frequently, robbers are targeting other types of small stores, because there is a perception that these stores have inadequate video surveillance. Are you making your store a target?

A majority of crime is considered opportunistic. If a criminal feels as though he can get away with a crime, he will commit one. It's a sad sign of the times when deterrents need to be in place to prevent crimes. Not too long ago, a person's conscience was enough to stop him from committing a crime. A recent study of shoplifters by a major university revealed that the majority would not have shoplifted if they knew they were being watched. Fortunately for storeowners, video surveillance equipment prices have plummeted in recent years, so that even the most modest of shop owners can afford to install an effective video surveillance system in their stores.

So if most criminals are deterred from committing crimes when they know they are being watched, it's no wonder that they are beginning to pick easier targets more frequently. Put yourself in the mind of a criminal for a moment. If you were going to rob a store would you pick one that had an obvious video surveillance system and a high amount of foot traffic, or a small boutique with no video surveillance and much less foot traffic? The answer is pretty obvious. You may think that your store is in a good neighborhood, but criminals will often travel in order to get to an easier target.

Now that you're worried about your safety and that of your employees, rest assured that there is a light at the end of this tunnel! It is possible to purchase and install an effective video surveillance system for less than $500 and much cheaper if you desire. A good color video camera can be purchased for less than $100. You can use an old VCR to record, as long as the picture quality is good, or you can purchase one for around $50. A nineteen-inch television is big enough and those can be found for under $100. You'll want to purchase a month's worth of video tapes, a mounting bracket for the television and to save money on coaxial cable, you can just mount the camera to the television. Now you have an effective video surveillance system for well under $500!

Since criminals seem to be looking for targets that are easier to rob than gas stations and convenience stores, it's in your best interest to consider a video surveillance system for your store. You simply need a color camera, a television with a mounting bracket, a VCR and videotapes and you've got yourself an effective deterrent to robberies. This simple surveillance system could save your life!
